To strengthen technical cooperation between the laboratory’s technical teams and the divisions of the Regional Government, our laboratory held a first workshop on the analysis of geographic data and advanced computer systems.
The training activity was led by the study team headed by Marcela Martínez, and by the Head of Geographic Systems, Helen de la Fuente, and Diego Ramírez, Head of Data Science. Professionals from the Planning and Development and Infrastructure and Transport divisions attended this training.
The training activity was led by the study team headed by Marcela Martínez, and by the Head of Geographic Systems, Helen de la Fuente, and Diego Ramírez, Head of Data Science. Professionals from the Planning and Development and Infrastructure and Transport divisions attended this training.
This first workshop session started with an overview of geographic data collection, then the use of GIS tools combined with statistical and programming methods for data visualization, and finally a deep dive into the methodology used in the CityScope platform.
Helen de la Fuente commented, “Telling the Regional Government’s technical teams how we complement GIS with data analysis-oriented programming, using a technological deployment in line with the global MIT City Science standard, is of particular interest because it is our added value. It is a step forward in innovation, both for data collection and for data analysis mapped on maps, which significantly contributes to the integration of multidimensional variables.”
Meanwhile, for the head of data science at the laboratory, “this opportunity to socialize with technical teams is a formidable instance to continue growing as a laboratory.” According to Ramírez, this synchronization of conversations about how to project the impacts of different urban initiatives “enriches the experiences of both our teams and theirs, and that is key to finding new ways to create city science for the region.”
This training initiative for GORE Biobío officials will not be the only one developed by the laboratory. Flanked by her study team, Marcela Martínez pointed out that “this first instance was dedicated to the areas with which we can have a technical closeness. Undoubtedly, when we convene other areas of the regional executive, we will have different conversations, different approaches, and that enriches our work, our applied research for the city.”
