“Having a very good turnout, we were able to gather valuable and high-quality information regarding urban life in Talcahuano. It is a solid first step towards having a new CityScope in the port city.”
Marcela Martínez, director of studies at the laboratory, concluded her participation in a new session of the city port council, led by the CEO of Puertos de Talcahuano Cristian Wulf, and the Division Chief of the Planning and Regional Development Division of the Gobierno Regional del Biobío, Blas Araneda.
At the meeting, which was also attended by regional authorities from the ministries of Public Works and Transport and Telecommunications, Martínez commented, “We detected significant challenges for Talcahuano in various areas, especially concerning the deficient and suboptimal connectivity in the commune, the scarce availability of public spaces in historical neighborhoods, and the noise and environmental pollution resulting from industrial activity.”
City Lab Biobío will use this information to develop a new CityScope platform for Talcahuano, which will focus on investigating and visualizing the city-port interaction, with an emphasis on seeing how freight transportation passing through the city impacts urban life. The agreement signed with Talcahuano Ports has been highlighted by MIT City Science researchers, who praised the speed at which the MIT network lab progresses, both in team formation and in advancing acquired challenges.
