Evolving urban planning
In these two years of work in the lab, we formed a high-standard professional and technical team that not only analyzed the project portfolio for the Costanera de Concepción in detail and delivered the CityScope platform in record time, but also created two very important alliances to continue expanding the city science we develop in cooperation with the MIT Media Lab, in San Pedro de la Paz and Talcahuano.
We also consolidated a network of key actors for City Lab Biobío, in the private sector with Puertos de Talcahuano and ClaroChile, and in public institutions with the incorporation of the SEREMI of Housing and Urbanism into the lab’s board. We built trust with regional councilors and actively engaged with nationally renowned academics and research centers such as CENIA Chile, specializing in Artificial Intelligence.
All this is a solid foundation to set a common goal: to evolve the way we plan our cities.

CityScope Encounter: MIT City Science and City Lab Biobío Present Results
An increase of 30% in the availability of plazas and parks thanks to the recovery of residual spaces, the reduction of 17.45 km of unpaved sidewalks, and a 51% increase in the availability of bike lanes are just some of the results produced by the CityScope platform that the lab is implementing in Gran Concepción, in cooperation with the MIT Media Lab.
“In Concepción, the experts are already here, so this is a collaboration where we transfer technology and knowledge to together understand the community’s needs, translate that into data using a tool that helps us predict the impact of these needs, and thus contribute to the authorities for decision-making that improves the quality of life for the citizens,” commented Luis Alonso, principal researchers of the City Science group at the MIT Media Lab.

Successful call to the first workshop in Talcahuano allows understanding challenges in the commune
The event, organized by Puertos de Talcahuano and City Lab Biobío, addressed topics such as urban mobility and the environment. Cristian Wulf emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue, while Marcela Martínez appreciated the high participation and collaborative work to improve the city.

SEREMI MINV Biobío: new member of the City Lab Biobío board comes to reinforce the integrative vision of the city
“We are excited about the addition of SEREMI Claudia Toledo to the board because, in addition to her professional abilities, it will mean a closer collaboration with an organization that handles important projects in the region,” highlighted Fernando Pérez.

Expo Edifica Neuquén: city science for the cities in the south of the world
During the Expo, City Lab Biobío presented its work at an interactive stand, where attendees could talk with the lab professionals about the city science methodology and the progress made in the study of the Costanera de Concepción through the implementation of CityScope.
Helen commented that “sharing the knowledge generated with CityScope is beneficial for everyone. The lab has the capability to contribute both in Biobío and in other cities facing rapid growth, such as Neuquén and the industries in the province that are causing an increase in the population of urban centers.”

Together with Radio Universidad de Concepción, we are talking with experts about fifteen topics related to the city and the experience of living in it. In this edition, we present the chapters on Culture with Mauricio Castro, and City and Gender with Dr. Mabel Alarcón.
